We met in a location that was surrounded by evergreens and pine trees, which provided us with very intricate, uniform textures and shades of green and brown from dried grass and wildflowers. I’ve always thought that a grassy field never fails to make an attractive setting for portraits; it can either make a picture seem casual and even very elegant.

We began shooting with the foliage on the background, but having to deal with unpredictable light led me to move constantly. Eventually, I found a very good angle by stepping on a picnic table and shoot from above and occasionally blocking the hard sunlight with a photographic umbrella.

Shooting portraits from a high angle creates an intricate dynamic. I love how it flattens out the surface and vanishes the horizon line. In the case of this portrait session with Katherine, it also worked as an excellent solution to clear her facial features from unnecessary shadows.
