Sunny 16 Rule Portrait Session

Recently, I had the opportunity to do an outdoor portrait session at a location I wanted to try for a long time. The overcast, foggy weather that was going on after a long rainy day couldn't have made me any happier, as it provided us with flat diffused daylight that filled Danielle’s face very nicely on every single frame.

On this photo session, I relied on the sunny 16 rule, which allowed me to shoot on a good pace. I realize how liberating using this technique is, I especially like how it forces me to concentrate on just adjusting one setting to get a decent exposure, which is great because it helps me focus more on composition and engage better with the subject.

On my next opportunity, I intend to increase my shutter speed just a tad so I can minimize camera shake and get things a little sharper. If you’re curious to know more about the sunny 16 rule, I recommend watching this video by The Forest Film Lab
